Export Market Development Grant

The Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) is a Federal Government assistance program administered through AusTrade. The program is designed to encourage small and medium businesses to develop export markets.

EMDG recipients include many of Australia’s best-known exporters, but it’s not just for those with established export lines. The grant can assist aspiring export-ready businesses, as well as supporting current exporters to expand into existing and new markets.

Who can apply for an EMDG in Australia:

An entity with an ABN that has:

  • Carried on business in Australia with an income of less than $20 million for the year
  • Promoted the export of goods and/or the delivery of services outside Australia
  • Promoted certain services in Australia to non-residents
  • Promoted inbound tourism
  • Promoted the export of intellectual property and know-how outside Australia

What is the grant amount:

  • The EMDG is a demand driven, eligibility-based program, subject to annual funding (currently $157.9m per year)
  • Grants are available across 3 tiers – determined by where you fit in the export market journey
  • Grant amounts are subject to having a Grants Agreement in place with AusTrade, maximum amounts being set for each tier and each year of agreement. The maximum amount is determined after the application closing date and assessment of applications
  • Grants can be claimed for up to 8 years

What expenses can be claimed:

  • Overseas representation and buyers
  • Marketing consultants
  • Marketing visits
  • Free samples
  • Trade fairs, seminars, in-store promotions
  • Promotional literature and advertising
  • Registration and/or insurance of eligible intellectual property
